Analyzing forms using artificial intelligence (handwriting recognition)

Recognizing handwritten forms is a major challenge. The forms must be manually transferred to digital systems, which is time-consuming and error-prone. The aim of the project was to improve the recognition rate of handwritten forms through the use of artificial intelligence in order to automate such processes and increase the accuracy of data collection.

Challenge

Recognizing handwritten forms is a major challenge. Forms that are quickly filled out by hand are difficult for traditional OCR (optical character recognition) techniques to classify, especially when they contain free text fields and multiple-choice questions. A typical example of this problem is the collection of patient information in medical facilities. Here, forms are often filled out by hand, containing important information such as symptoms, medical history, and medication intake. These forms must then be manually transferred to digital systems, which is time-consuming and prone to errors. The aim of the project was to improve the rate of recognition of handwritten forms through the use of artificial intelligence in order to automate such processes and increase the accuracy of data entry.

Methods

As part of the project, completed sample forms with multiple-choice questions and free text fields were evaluated using cloud AI tools. Our experts developed software that analyzes these forms and converts them into a machine-readable format. By using modern AI techniques, we were able to significantly increase the recognition rate of handwriting samples. Modern OMR (optical mark recognition) techniques also enabled context-based evaluation of the elements on the forms. In addition, the results were further corrected and optimized through the use of LLMs (large language models).
