Trends and Priorities in Digitalization in the Public Sector
This year’s Smart Country Convention 2024 once again offered exciting insights into digital developments for modern administration and smart cities. With topics ranging from mobility and smart city solutions to cybersecurity, the event provided numerous ideas for designing an efficient, citizen-friendly, and resilient public administration. Ron Kneffel and Janine Richter from BREDEX were on site to take note of the most important trends and actively participate in discussions on digitization, security, and sustainability.
IT Security in the Public Sector Spotlight: Workshop with Ron Kneffel
With the increase in targeted cyberattacks on government institutions and local authorities, there is a growing need for comprehensive, resilient security concepts. In his workshop “IT security in the public sector,” Ron Kneffel, Head of IT Security at BREDEX, highlighted the specific threats and solutions for public administration. The workshop was attended by mayors and public sector executives who are increasingly confronted with IT security challenges in their daily work.
In his workshop, Ron presented various current attack patterns and demonstrated realistic scenarios to create a deep understanding of the threat environment and the requirements for a robust security architecture. A central goal was the practical implementation of the knowledge imparted, which provided participants with techniques to effectively prevent security incidents and protect their institutions in the best possible way. The topics covered in the workshop ranged from the early detection of security vulnerabilities and the rapid implementation of preventive measures to raising employee awareness of their active role in IT security. The practical exchange with participants and the intensive discussions once again highlighted the high importance of cybersecurity in the public sector.
Workshop on “IT Security & Cyber Resilience in the Public Sector” at the Bitkom Academy
Visitors were also able to participate in an open workshop led by Ron from the Bitkom Academy on the topic of “IT Security & Cyber Resilience in the Public Sector.” This workshop provides in-depth knowledge of current attack techniques and teaches practical skills for effectively countering IT security threats in the public sector.
Trends and Innovations at SCCON 2024
The Future of Digital Administration: Efficiency through Open Data and Exchange
Today, smart, digitized administration means more than just electronic file storage—it puts citizens at the center and optimizes administrative processes through innovative technologies. The buzzword “open data” was frequently heard at the exhibition and describes the approach of making administrative data freely accessible, thereby promoting transparency and efficiency. The vision of an open error culture, in which lessons are learned from mistakes and knowledge is shared, is also seen as crucial not only to accelerating the progress of digitization, but also to making it sustainable. Another key topic was the exchange of international best practices – Latvia, Liechtenstein, Northern Ireland, and Greece shared their experiences with digital citizen services, which can inspire Germany to improve its own digital administrative services and simplify access.
Smart Cities and Mobility: Visions for the Urban Future
Cities and municipalities are faced with the task of becoming more efficient and livable through digitalization. The SmartCity was therefore one of the frequently mentioned buzzwords describing the vision of a modern, digital infrastructure. This includes smart mobility solutions such as intelligent traffic control systems and autonomous traffic concepts, which not only make cities more flexible and environmentally friendly, but can also improve quality of life. The topic of green IT was also discussed intensively in this context: Sustainability plays a key role if cities are to be made more environmentally friendly in the future, for example through the use of energy-efficient technology and renewable energies for the operation of digital systems.
Cybersecurity: Protection against Growing Threats
One focus of SCCON 2024 was on cybersecurity—a topic that ran through many presentations and discussions. The increasing networking and digitization of administrative processes brings with it new areas of vulnerability, and cyberattacks have long been an everyday threat to public institutions. The protection of sensitive data and critical infrastructure is therefore an essential part of any digitization strategy pursued in the public sector. Cybersecurity was described in many panels as an integral part of any digital planning to ensure that digitization is implemented not only efficiently but also securely.
Conclusion and Outlook
The Smart Country Convention 2024 clearly demonstrated that the path to a digital future will be shaped by a wide range of technologies and concepts. For Ron, Janine, and the BREDEX team, the trade fair was a valuable opportunity to experience and discuss new trends as well as the importance of strong cybersecurity in the public sector. The insights and inspiration gained will be incorporated into future projects, contributing to the digital transformation of public authorities and local governments.
