Recap First Lego League 2025: Innovations at the House of Science in Braunschweig

First Lego League im Haus der Wissenschaft

Last Saturday, the First Lego League (FLL), which had been held at Wilhelm Gymnasium in Braunschweig in recent years, took place at the House of Science for the first time—an event that brings together technology enthusiasts and creative minds. The participation of the two renowned Braunschweig teams, Wilhelm Robotix and RHS-RobotX, was particularly gratifying, as they impressed with their innovative solutions.

What Is the First Lego League?

The First Lego League is an international research and robotics competition that inspires children and young people to take an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Participants demonstrate their skills in various categories, including research, robot game, robot design, and teamwork. Each year, there is a new theme, and innovative solutions are developed in the research category. For the robot game category, students design and program their own robots using LEGO Mindstorms to solve tricky tasks on a specified playing field. The focus is on creative thinking, teamwork, and technical understanding.

Focus on Creativity and Innovation

Our BREDEX judges, who were responsible in particular for the robot design category, experienced an exciting competition and were impressed by the innovative concepts. The creativity of the teams made the event a unique experience. Some groups even staged their ideas as plays—impressive proof of the versatility and ingenuity of the students.

RHS-RobotX Impresses with Groundbreaking Solution

A particular highlight was the outstanding performance of the RHS-RobotX team, which had been working intensively on its project since August. Their innovative idea for underwater communication—and, above all, the implementation of a prototype—via radio particularly impressed the jury. By transmitting sound at 450 hertz, they developed a solution that could help divers communicate with their boat. To perfect their idea, the team interviewed several experts from the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Berlin and applied the knowledge they gained in a targeted manner. This meticulous preparation paid off: RHS-RobotX secured first place and qualified for the Germany-wide competition thanks to this and their victory in the Robot Game.

Demanding Challenges on the Playing Field

This year’s challenge presented the teams with particular difficulties. Whereas in previous years colored lines on the playing field served as orientation for the robots, this time the students had to program their robots so that they could move safely across the playing field and skillfully avoid obstacles even without color sensors. The teams developed clever modules that they flexibly adapted to their robot vehicles in order to accomplish the tasks at hand.

Teamwork and Agile Methods

In addition to technical skills, teamwork also played a central role. Many teams relied on agile methods such as design thinking and continuous improvement processes to develop their solutions efficiently. Every member was integrated into the work—a valuable experience that strengthens team spirit and problem-solving skills.

An Event with a Huge Response

The event attracted numerous guests to the House of Science, who were thrilled to see the creative and dedicated students in action. Thanks to a livestream, interested viewers from all over could also watch the event. In addition, NDR reported on the event in a news segment.

RHS-RobotX is participating in the First Lego League for the seventh time and will now compete in the Germany-wide competition. We at BREDEX are proud to sponsor this special event and support it with our commitment. It is inspiring to see the enthusiasm with which the students tackle the STEM challenges – a great investment in the future!
