A Field Report from My Working Environment
“In our increasingly digital world, artificial intelligence has become an indispensable topic.”
Almost every other article or blog post on the subject of artificial intelligence (AI) begins with this or a similar sentence. And it’s true, AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in various areas of our lives and has already become almost indispensable in many areas. I have been using AI in my daily work for quite some time now and would like to discuss how AI has specifically changed my work in the dynamic world of work and what the biggest advantages are for me.
But before I begin my review, I would like to give a brief insight into the fascinating development of AI and AI tools. When you look at these developments, it quickly becomes clear that artificial intelligence is not such a “super new thing” of the last five years, but that these advanced technologies have been in use for several years.
1. The Birth of Artificial Intelligence
The official birth year of AI is often cited as 1956, when John McCarthy introduced and coined the term “artificial intelligence” at the Dartmouth Conference. Based on this historic conference and the numerous research efforts of various committed individuals prior to it, the first AI programs were developed in the following years. These were capable of performing tasks such as playing chess or solving simple mathematical problems.
However, the 1980s and 1990s were marked by a phase of disillusionment that became known as the “AI winter.” During this period, interest in AI declined sharply. Nevertheless, significant progress was made in the field of machine learning and neural networks during these years. This winter ended with the victory of the AI model Deep Blue over the then world chess champion Garry Kasparov, which is still of great significance today.
With the turn of the millennium and the advent of more powerful computers and larger amounts of data, AI began to find real-world applications in various innovative areas. Today, AI systems are present in many areas of our lives, from voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa to applications in healthcare, finance, and the automotive industry.
With the introduction of the Large Language Model (LLM) ChatGPT, AI became even more prevalent and experienced a real boom. For me, too, a lot has changed in my everyday work since then.
After this brief review, we now come to the actual question—how has my everyday work changed in concrete terms?
2. My First Encounter with ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence
My first encounter with ChatGPT was when I wanted to write a wedding card for a couple I didn’t know (I was invited as a “plus one”). Just for fun and out of interest, I created an account and asked the language model to write a text for me. It produced a surprisingly good text in just a few seconds. And what can I say, I was thrilled and thought that I would never have to write texts myself again.
Of course, that’s not the case, and in the end I decided to write the wedding text myself, but it was a start that led me to take the first steps with this new technology in my daily work as well.
3. How Has AI Changed My Everyday Work?
Artificial intelligence probably has different effects on each of our everyday working lives.
For me personally, it has simplified and enriched my work in many ways. I work in professional development and, among other things, design new training solutions for our customers and training programs for our employees. I deal with texts and the development of new products on a daily basis.
In the following, I will discuss the various areas of my work in collaboration with AI.
Text Generation with AI
I work with some form of text every day. In the past, I would sometimes sit at my desk in front of a blank sheet of paper and not know where to start. Now, on days like that, I enter a prompt into one of the language models and generate initial bullet points or texts on the topic, which gives me a wonderful starting point. The “fear” of the blank page is taken away from me – I can build on this starting point wonderfully, become faster and come up with other, sometimes better ideas, and further opportunities arise. I myself call this process the knowledge ladder, which consists of two “knowledge individuals.” In the past, this knowledge ladder consisted of two people, but today it can also consist of humans and machines. This example is a great asset to my work and my everyday life.
Translations with AI
Since we are a bilingual company and always publish our internal texts in English and German, the support of AI models saves me several hours of translation time. This allows me to write a text in my preferred language and generate a translation with just three clicks. I still have to proofread it, but the minimal changes required are not relevant in terms of time. The potential savings here are so enormous that this area of application in particular has become indispensable.
Idea Generator / Creative Brainstorming with AI
The knowledge ladder mentioned above is also often important in my creative processes with AI. AI models often seem very human in their responses. You can engage in a real conversation with them and sometimes get very exciting answers and new ideas. The knowledge ladder “at its best.” In projects where I want to develop new ideas, I sometimes use AI to engage in a creative brainstorming exchange and thus generate new ideas that arise from my existing knowledge and the impulses provided by AI.
Of course, there are also sessions in which I engage in an exchange with knowledge carriers from the company, and these sessions are often even more valuable, depending on the person. I often present the AI sessions as my own classification before a human session, which gives us a great basis on which to build.
4. Summary
So how does AI affect my everyday work?
- For many tasks, AI creates a basis on which I can build my knowledge.
- Not only does it save me a lot of time, but it also improves my results in many areas.
- I often use AI to prepare for human meetings or collaboration.
I am excited to see how artificial intelligence will continue to develop and how it will further change my everyday work.
