Every year on March 8, International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world. It is a day to honor women’s achievements, draw attention to existing inequalities, and advocate for the rights of all women. It is a time to recognize the strength, resilience, and tireless dedication of women in all walks of life.
The origins of this day date back to 1910, when German socialist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an international women’s day at the Second International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. Since then, this day has become a symbol of the struggle for equality and recognition of women’s achievements.
A Day for Rethinking and Taking Action
Nevertheless, we must not forget that the road to equality is far from over. In many parts of the world, women still face inequalities, whether through gender-based violence, lack of access to education, or discrimination in the workplace. International Women’s Day reminds us that we must continue to fight for a more just and equal world.
This day should not only be a cause for celebration, but also an opportunity for reflection and action. We can all contribute by standing up for women’s rights, highlighting inequalities, and demanding change at the political level. By encouraging women to raise their voices and stand up for what they believe in, we can create a world where all people have equal opportunities and possibilities.
BREDEX Contribution to International Women's Day
As in previous years, BREDEX is using International Women’s Day as an opportunity to show its commitment to women and support them in its own way. Among those who need particular help and support are women who have to flee domestic violence. Contrary to popular belief, this violence does not have to take place in the woman’s own home, and it does not only include physical violence, but also psychological abuse. The women affected need spaces where they are protected from these attacks. Women’s shelters are a place of refuge for women seeking this protection, regardless of whether they have children or not, their religious affiliation, where they come from, or their social status.
Non-profit organizations are often responsible for running women’s shelters, and volunteers support women on their journey out of violence and into a self-determined life. However, this also means that these organizations are dependent on donations to maintain their operations. To contribute to this difficult work, BREDEX is donating €500 to the Braunschweig women’s shelter so that the women there can be provided with toiletries. We hope that this will make their everyday lives at least a little bit easier.
Your Contribution to International Women's Day
Help is needed all over the world. With your support, you can also help promote projects and associations that support women. Use March 8 as a day to celebrate women’s achievements, become more aware of the challenges they face, and work together for a world where equality and respect for all are a given. Every small step we take today can make a big difference for the future of women around the world.
