Climate Protection Project: Marine Conservation and Cooking Ovens in India

Climate Partner Klimaschutzprojekt und Meeresschutz

To offset our unavoidable CO2 emissions from 2022, we are supporting a climate protection project that combines global marine conservation with wood-saving cooking stoves in India.

Protecting Sensitive Marine Ecosystems

For every ton of CO2 saved through contributions to a certified climate protection project, 10 kg of plastic are collected in coastal regions. This prevents plastic from entering the sea and protects sensitive marine ecosystems.

The ocean stores a quarter of the CO2 from the atmosphere and as much as 93 percent of the heat from the greenhouse effect, making it an essential brake on climate change. Warming, overfishing, pollutants, and waste threaten this balancing function.

Over 12 million tons of plastic waste end up in the sea every year. Developing countries in particular often lack the infrastructure for proper disposal.

Various initiatives prevent plastic waste from entering the sea and at the same time are committed to improving the living conditions of the collector communities – thus contributing to the protection of the environment.

Portable Cooking Ovens Reduce Air Pollution

The portable stoves distributed as part of the project are made of cast iron, require less firewood, and reduce indoor air pollution and CO2 emissions. This reduces smoke exposure, which poses a health risk, especially for women and children.

In total, the project will equip several thousand households with efficient cooking stoves. Reduced demand for firewood helps to minimize deforestation in the region, which has a positive impact on biodiversity.

We are enthusiastic about these multifaceted projects and are happy to contribute to climate protection.
