The Global Game Jam – A Creative Journey through Digital Gaming Worlds

The Global Game Jam (GGJ for short) is an annual event that enjoys great popularity worldwide and brings together gaming enthusiasts from all over the world. Born from the idea of developing creative and innovative games in a short period of time, the GGJ has undergone impressive development since its inception in 2009.
At the heart of the Global Game Jam is the shared experience of designing a game from scratch in an intense period of just 48 hours. This global creative marathon brings together developers, designers, artists, and other creative minds to work in teams on new game ideas. Participants come from a wide variety of backgrounds, resulting in a fascinating mix of ideas and perspectives.

The Global Game Jam at BREDEX

This year, BREDEX once again provided space and hosted a game jam in Braunschweig as part of GGJ. Anyone interested in not only designing games but also developing them was invited to this event. In the end, a diverse group of 25 people came together, all with the same goal: to spend a weekend developing games together.

A Start with Obstacles

Developing finished games in a single weekend is a challenge in itself. It becomes particularly difficult when the theme is only announced at the beginning of the event. This means that participants cannot prepare for the weekend in any particular way, but it does allow them to approach the task with much greater creative freedom. This year’s theme was “Make me laugh,” which offered a wide range of possibilities for developing all kinds of games. The results presented at the end were just as varied.

One Weekend – 6 Different Games

Between Friday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m., participants had time to work on their games. They could decide for themselves how long and how intensively they wanted to work on their projects. First, they started by gathering ideas, with each group figuring out for themselves which direction they wanted to go in. Then the exciting part began. With a lot of enthusiasm and motivation, the ideas were translated into independent games in which everyone could contribute their own talents.
In the end, six computer games were created that could not have been more different. Starting with a 2D puzzle game in which elements must be assembled on a Windows-like desktop to find the fifth element, to a 3D arcade game in which you take on the role of a Christmas elf who assembles gifts on his own, to a 2D top-down game in which you must entertain the king as a court jester.

Global Game Jam also next Year

The joy and relief on the participants’ faces at the end was impossible to miss. The long weekend had demanded a lot from them, but together they had achieved something extraordinary and could rightly be proud of themselves and their work. Inspired by this enthusiasm, we are already looking forward to next year and the next GGJ. See you at Global Game Jam 2025!
