Decision-Making in Project Management (Part 6)

Time and Timing

In my series, I have highlighted five aspects:

  1. Accepting many good solutions: It is helpful to give up the desire to always make the best decision. By accepting the existence of many good solutions, we broaden our field of vision and increase the chance of finding a good solution. But this takes time, as we have to deal with more options.
  2. The role of fear: Fear is part of life and serves a purpose. By taking our fears seriously, we enable our consciousness to make decisions. At the same time, new options open up that our fear had previously blinded us to.
  3. Mental flexibility: To remain flexible, we should keep our working memory free. Not all decisions require postponement, and sometimes we can trust others to relieve us of the burden. Efficient filters create space for relevant decisions.
  4. Solution-oriented, optimistic thinking: Sacrifices are worthwhile when arguments are solution-oriented, optimistic, and constructive.
  5. Consistent behavior in moments of greatest tension: Once we have reviewed our options and disempowered our fears, we can follow our own rules when faced with difficult decisions.

It All Comes Down to the Right Timing

Ultimately, decision-making comes down to timing. The time available is limited, while the amount of potential information seems unlimited. As managers, we face various dilemmas: we are expected to be decisive and level-headed. We want to protect and support our employees. Standing still is a step backward, but progress carries risks. Hindsight is always 20/20. To be able to make decisions, it is important to use the limited time effectively. Periods of rest and relaxation in our individual comfort zone are essential to prepare us for challenging decisions. “Things turn out differently than you think.” That’s true. Some people use this saying as an argument for not having to plan at all. However, they often overlook the fact that “Things turn out differently than you think” is just as true.

Dealing with Time Consciously

Reality shows us time and again that plans can change and unforeseen situations can arise. I believe it is very important to tailor the timing of the various phases of our decision-making process to our individual work and life situations.
Let us use our time consciously and responsibly, set our priorities, and be aware of the consequences of our decisions.
