Digitalization Is More than just Technology!

In today’s world, the term “digitalization” is omnipresent and is becoming particularly important in the business environment. However, the term is often mistakenly equated with digital technologies and modern tools. This is a mistake, because digitalization is more than just technology—it is a transformation process that takes place at many levels of a company.
That’s all well and good—but what exactly does that mean in practice?

Transforming Businesses through Digitalization

Answering this question involves several aspects that can only be partially considered here. Nevertheless, we will examine this topic in more detail, focusing on digital collaboration and the importance of lifelong learning in digitization processes. These considerations are based on a conversation we had with our customer Protego – Braunschweiger Flammenfilter GmbH. We are very grateful to Protego for this valuable exchange.
So, back to our initial question. First of all, establishing digital tools is a wonderful opportunity, if not a necessity, to enable and effectively shape communication and collaboration in decentralized teams, but also in entire corporate structures. What needs to be considered here is that such implementations should be accompanied by clear agreements on the exact use of the tools and appropriate governance so that the possibilities of digital collaboration can be exploited securely and sustainably.

A Question of “Technology”

The introduction and use of new technical innovations or tools alone is not enough to shape digital collaboration within a company and thus drive forward the digitization process. New knowledge and skills need to be anchored in such a way that people can use the new technologies well and efficiently for themselves and within a team. Without the relevant application knowledge, new tools, however innovative they may be, are pretty useless. Such acquisition and learning processes must be well designed, whether in qualification training courses or non-formal educational offerings.
If we remind ourselves that digitalization in companies is a constant process of change, meaning that new technologies will always be emerging, we can begin to appreciate the importance of lifelong learning in companies. This is because digitalization and the associated processes of change will continue to accelerate. Learning and knowledge building are important components in countering this. Anchoring this approach in your own corporate culture can be crucial for its feasibility. Not only for the individual, but also for the entire company.

Transforming Corporate Culture – Embedding Digitalization Strategies

Digitalization is a comprehensive process that involves much more than just technology. It is a transformation of corporate culture, teamwork, and the entire mindset of an organization and its employees. That is why it is so important to involve employees in such a process and support them with specific learning opportunities. It is therefore important to accompany the digitization process and anchor important points in the digitization strategy in order to successfully implement such a project.
We would like to thank Protego – Braunschweiger Flammenfilter GmbH for their trust and valuable exchange on modern communication and working methods in the context of digitization strategies.
