Our trainees and dual students are regularly presented with new challenges. The latest cohort joined us in August. Using LEGO® Mindstorms® kits, they were able to learn the basics of using Java and practice programming. But that was just the beginning.

This time, Vivian Lieke and Mario Kuehn tell us about the latest task.

Let’s Dungeon Crawl!

After putting our programming skills to the test with the calculator project, the Dungeon Crawler project was the crowning finale of our Java training. The aim was to program our own little game, complete with levels, enemies, items, etc., using Java and JavaFX.

As with many things in life, the beginning was (one of) the hardest parts. Since we were on our own for the first time with this task, everyone had to come up with their own strategy for how to approach such a game. Due to little or no previous experience with JavaFX, it was also important at the beginning to familiarize ourselves with it as well as with Scene Builder, a tool for creating interfaces and thus the levels of our games.

In addition to programming, the design and concept were other important parts of the game. From a “Breaking Bad”-inspired concept to an AI-generated story: there were no limits to our creativity. We even created the graphics ourselves. After weeks of pixel work, we faced the big hurdle of decorating them with animations. But by joining forces, we were able to master this as well.

The dungeon crawler was not only a good project for getting to know JavaFX, but also for learning what it means to work on a project every day for two months. You learn to set goals for yourself, manage your time well, and, even if it was a little difficult at first, ask others for help and accept it. In the end, we had four completely different games that we were all proud to present.

Get started at BREDEX with an apprenticeship

It is important to us that our apprentices have the opportunity to develop their own ideas. They are given independent tasks and are part of a project team. In a respectful and appreciative environment, they can exchange ideas with their colleagues and learn from them. This not only strengthens teamwork, but is also an essential part of our BX culture.
